The land is light
in ihrer Macht. Lös meinen Faden los.
The land is light
The land is light; dark every leaf.
You murmur: magic spells are near.
Your words are raised in my belief
To icons, as I tiptoe here.
I love you. On the garden chair
Sleep two white hands above your knee.
My life reposes in their power,
A silver spool. O cut me free!

The Poet
Der Dichter
Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926)
Der Dichter
Du entfernst dich von mir, du Stunde.
Wunden schlägt mir dein Flügelschlag.
Allein: was soll ich mit meinem Munde?
Mit meiner Nacht? Mit meinem Tag?
Ich habe keine Geliebte, kein Haus,
Keine Stelle, auf der ich lebe.
Alle Dinge, an die ich mich gebe,
Werden reich und geben mich aus.
The Poet
You hour, you are drifting away:
Your wing is a blade that smites.
But what are my lips to say?
What to do with my days, my nights?
No darling, no house for me,
No place in which I live.
Myself into much I give,
Much making a rich gift of me.

La Vuelta De Los Campos
Julio Herrera y Reissig (1875-1910)
Evening rewards hard toil with heavenly gold…
Women appear in dainty cotton dresses,
plait sprigs of lime and lily in their tresses,
or ply the needle on the cool threshold.
Two girls with water-pitchers sidle by…
The shawls, the studded boots, the walking-sticks;
the sleepy lapse of time that quietly ticks.
Combing the thickets, an Arcadian sigh…
Strict silence. ...The marimbas’ hollow clang
hums ballads at the pond where vapours hang.
The lakes fade out as ghostly pinpoints burn,
the hills, now mythic, wear a rosy crown…
Far off, the tracks are smoking, dusty-brown,
as all who labour in the fields return.

The Theatre of the Humble
El Teatro de los humildes
Julio Herrera y Reissig (1875-1910)
se cuajan los apriscos en vagas nebulosas;
cien estrellas lozanas han abierto una a una;
The Theatre of the Humble
The countryside is as the Bible says...
Evening sinks down among the hills to die;
a final flash of sunlight threads through high
towers, to gleam on fairy lattices.
A muted fog of wild cacophony
wells up, deep-throated, limitless, obscure;
night smiles upon the hamlet, tenderly,
like honest death on one whose heart is pure.
Across the great, green, olive, blue expanse,
the sheepfolds cloy to patches in the haze;
a hundred star-points flaunt their brilliance
in sweetbriar silence that a cricket frays…
The distant mill and moon in dalliance
recall to mind the old, romantic days.

Magic
Magie
Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926)
Magie
Aus unbeschreiblicher Verwandlung stammen
solche Gebilde-: Fühl! und glaub!
Wir leidens oft: zu Asche werden Flammen;
Magic
Some process, not to be described, engenders
these images. Open your heart! And trust!
We may regret that flames turn into cinders,
yet art can make a flame arise from dust.
Here’s magic: in the kingdom of enchantments
our humdrum words are lifted high above:
so to an unseen woodbird come endearments
from her melodious mate, the turtle-dove.

We are alone, afraid
Wir sind ganz angstallein
Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926)
Wir sind ganz angstallein
Wir sind ganz angstallein,
haben nur aneinander Halt,
jedes Wort wird wie ein Wald
vor unserm Wandern sein.
Unser Wille ist nur der Wind,
der uns drängt und dreht;
weil wir selber die Sehnsucht sind,
die in Blüten steht.
We are alone, afraid
We are alone, afraid,
hold one another nearest:
each word is as a forest
when we have strayed.
The wind, this will of ours,
forces us into turning,
and we are but the yearning
that dwells in flowers.

My own self at dusk I find!
My own self at dusk I find!
My own self at dusk I find!
Fields roll darkly in the wind,
Bark of birch-trees glistens, and
Over them the night draws on.
In their stillness I expand,
With the twigs my shoots extend,
Eager but to be aligned
In the harmony that’s all one…

The world is changing
Wandelt sich rasch auch die Welt
Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926)
Wandelt sich rasch auch die Welt
Wandelt sich rasch auch die Welt
wie Wolkengestalten,
alles Vollendete fällt
heim zum Uralten.
Über den Wandel und Gang,
weiter und freier,
währt noch dein Vor-Gesang,
Gott mit der Leier.
Nicht sind die Leiden erkannt,
nicht ist die Liebe gelernt,
und was im Tod uns entfernt,
ist nicht entschleiert.
Einzig das Lied überm Land
heiligt und feiert.
The world is changing
Swift as a cloud-shuffle
is the world’s changing:
all things completed fall
home to the Ancient.
Changing and ranging be
wider and freer:
yet lives thy minstrelsy,
God with the lyre.
Griefs are unnoticed and
love’s lore untended.
How we’re unfriended
by death, no hand unveils.
Only the song in the land
hallows and hails.

Violet
Veilchen
Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926)
Veilchen
Schlicht nur bist du stets gewesen,
Unbedeutend oft und klein.
Dennoch nimmt dein liebes Wesen
Jeden, jeden für dich ein.
Violet
You were ever slim and slight,
Insignificant and small.
Yet you are a sweet delight,
Yet you captivate us all.

I Live my Life
Ich lebe mein Leben
Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926)
I Live my Life
I live my life in widening rings
That soar above and beyond all things.
To close the last when I’m yet alive,
For this I shall strive.
I circle round God, round the ancient tower,
I circle through centuries long.
Am I a falcon, a storm-wind’s power,
Am I a mighty song?
